The conference will take place at the Streatham campus of the University of Exeter, in the south-west of England. Talks will be given in the Harrison lecture theatre of the Engineering building, and accommodation will be provided on site in Mardon Hall, a University hall of residence nearby.

A map specific to WideGap2001 is available in gif, gzipped postscript, and pdf formats, showing the locations of the accommodation hall, the poster session and the lecture theatre. There is also a University 3D map of the campus online, as well as a wide-area map showing the University campus in relation to Exeter town centre.

Transport

Details of how to get to Exeter by rail, coach, or plane are online.

To get from Heathrow Airport to Exeter, there are three main travel options using public transport (presented in order of decreasing cost):
  1. take the quick new Heathrow Express into London, straight to London Paddington station in 15 minutes, from where you can get a direct train to Exeter.
  2. take the RailAir coach to Reading station, a 45-minute trip, and pick up the train to Exeter from there (all trains from Paddington to Exeter stop at Reading anyway. It takes the train 30 minutes to get from Paddington to Reading). Reading is pronounced 'redding', to rhyme with 'bedding'. Rail timetables are online.
  3. take a National Express coach all the way to Exeter from Heathrow. Bus timetables are online too.
The trains in Britain lag behind other European states, but the train is still the fastest way to get to Exeter from Heathrow. The main train station in Exeter is called Exeter St David's, and this is where you should get off.

If you are arriving at a different London airport, it is probably best to take a train into central London, use the Circle Line on the London Underground to get to Paddington station, and then take a train to Exeter. You can buy a combined ticket to include both trains and the underground. Always buy return tickets as they are much cheaper than two singles!

Once you reach Exeter St David's station, you should take a taxi to the University campus, a 5-minute ride, which should cost around £5.00. If you arrive at the bus station, you could take a taxi to the campus or take bus route H, which runs back and forth from the campus to the town centre, approximately every 12 minutes until 18:00, and then every half-hour until 23:00.
